I met Bob in 2012 when he was 14. I was really surprised by how good his English was. His parents wanted him to continue improving his English, so they asked me to work with him. For the next year I helped him in his studies. He was a great student and progressed quite rapidly.
I often ask my students where they got their English name. They usually tend to tell me that they got it from a movie, a song, a book, or their elementary school teacher gave it to them. Bob had an interesting story for me. When he was in the third grade, the first year they begin studying English here, his teacher wrote several English names on the board and had the children choose a name. Bob told me he chose that name because it was the shortest one on the board and would thus be easy to remember. So, he is a good student, just a little on the lazy side.
He is currently studying Japanese at a university in Beijing. This summer he and his family will travel to Japan. Hopefully he will make a great tour guide and translator for them. He is back in Datong now visiting family. He called me up and invited me for dinner. Today is also his little sister's birthday, so we had a birthday cake to go with the pizza.

Chad and Family, Tony and Family, and I Get Together For a Meal
Last week a former teacher, Chad came with his family to visit. Chad was a teacher here from 2004-06. He married a local girl and they moved back to America. They have 2 children, Max who is 7, and Kate who is 2 (almost). We had dinner at a local restaurant with Tony Zhang and his family. It was good to see them all again.
