Any work published after 1977 retains its copyright for 70 years after the death of the author. Any work that was written for hire, uses a pseudonym, or was published anonymously will retain its copyright anywhere from 95-120 years depending on when it was published. In the U.S., any work published prior to 1923 is now in the public domain. On January 1, 2019, all works published in 1923 will become part of the public domain.
